Since cannabis started to become legal across the country, some seriously surprising issues regarding the plant have come up in courts of law. By far the most comical recent issue is that Denver is actually going to implement a smell ordinance to restrict the odor allowed to omit from dispensaries and grow ops.
The new rule was approved unanimously with a vote of 13 to 0 in City Council, and now it’s official – local businesses will need to invest in equipment and make changes to the way they operate in order to keep smells down in the city.
This ordinance is being put into place because of the high amount of smell complains the city has received. However, local businesses claim that they already have measures put in place, such as air filtration devices inside of stores and grow houses, to insure that there is not an offensive odor. Many local cannabis business owners fear that this is just another tactic to try and demonize cannabis and put a strain on businesses.
Greg Thomas, a representative for the Department of Environmental Health, told CBS News that he thinks this ordinance will do a lot of good, but also realizes that many local businesses already try and curb their odors, and that it is impossible to completely get rid of cannabis odor.
“I’m confident that odors will be minimized once everybody is up and running with their plans,” he explained. However, he added, “I would caution people to be realistic. It doesn’t mean that there will be zero odors.”
The finalized plan will appear before the Colorado Department of Health and Environment for approval, and by the end of this year should be implemented. While some local cannabis businesses owners feel attacked, the law also accounts for other smells, such as the odor produced by the Purina pet food plant in the city. Hopefully this new ordinance will not cause too many problems for the Denver cannabis industry.
