It’s always big news when a prominent politician admits publicly to cannabis use – and even more so when the person in question is a politician. However, it comes as no surprise that Dana Rohrabacher admitted to using medical cannabis while in office, as he has always been an outspoken supporter of the plant.
“I haven’t been able to go surfing for a year and a half, and I’ve been in severe pain,” he stated publicly. “And you know what? I tried [a marijuana-infused topical preparation] about two weeks ago, and it’s the first time… in a year and a half that I had a decent night’s sleep, because the arthritis pain was gone.”
He also admits to discovering marijuana as a cure for his pain at “one of these hempfests in San Bernardino,” where medical cannabis is legal. However, he does not deny that he broke federal law, even though he was using cannabis in a non-black market setting.
“Now don’t tell anybody I broke the law,” he said. “They’ll bust down my door and, you know, and take whatever’s inside and use it for evidence against me. The bottom line is that… there’s definitely cannabis in there, and it makes sure that I can sleep now.”
Rohrabacher’s bold statement stunned and shocked a lot of people, including his staff, who apparently were not privy to the fact that he planned on making this major announcement.
“This is definitely the first legislator in Congress in at least 30-some-odd years who has acknowledged to using marijuana illegally,” NORML executive director Allen St. Pierre told CannabisRadio.com. St. Pierre also added he was “stunned by the admission.”
Hopefully, this strong statement will help others in politics come forward about cannabis use and support, and help further remove the stigma that marijuana faces within American federal circles.
