Uruguay is undertaking a massive experiment with legal cannabis – they are allowing three types of cannabis to be sold in pharmacies.
According to Reuters, the National Drug Board in Uruguay just officially announced that by next year, these varieties will be available to consumers just like regular medicine. The different options available will have different levels of THC and CBD.
“There will be three options with indications about the effects of each that point beginners toward starting with the lowest level [of THC]”,Milton Romani, president of the board, stated in an interview with Reuters.
Uruguay already became the first country in history to legalize cannabis nationwide, and are taking their claim to fame a step further by making cannabis safe, regulated, and readily available. They estimate that these strains will go for about $1 a gram, and will be available by mid-2016 in stores. The government hopes to sell only their distinct, traceable strains in order to help regulate the substance and keep it off of the black market.
Uruguay also allows residents to grow up to six plants for personal use, and has currently extended official grow licenses to two companies. 3,200 people have currently registered with the government to be able to grow their own cannabis. If things go well, they hope to expand enough to eventually import cannabis legally to the U.S. and Europe. While it has taken them longer than anticipated to make changes and advances with their cannabis policy, the government feels good about the way they’ve been going about things so far.
“We want to do things right, and if takes a bit longer, so be it,” Romani stated in the interview. “We have to be very careful with this because any slip-up could ruin an experience that is unique in the world.”
