Marijuana is more accessible in the U.S. now more than ever before. Sixty-one percent of Americans approve of legalization, and 25 states have laws legalizing weed in some form. Thanks to all that support, a San Francisco gym is now able to cater to those who happen to enjoy hitting the gym as much as hitting a bong.
Get High, Train Harder
Beginning this fall, you can join the world’s first weed-friendly gym, Power Plant Fitness. Members will be allowed to smoke while working out, but only after completing a “cannabis performance assessment” to evaluate their tolerance so no one loses control while on a treadmill. According to Colorado gym owner Clifford Drusinsky, marijuana can help some reach their fitness goals. “Marijuana relaxes me and allows me to go into a controlled, meditational place. When I get high, I train smarter and focus on form.”
Co-owners Jim McAlpine and former NFL star Ricky Williams (suspended multiple times for marijuana use) hope that Power Plant Fitness will help remove the stigma that pot just makes you lazy and hungry. “Marijuana, if you use it in a responsible way, accentuates the parts of sports that you love and helps you to do them better,” McAlpine said on his 420 Games Blog. “It won’t be a place to get high and just screw around. We are focused on the athletic side, not the cannabis side.”
In addition to allowing patrons to vape indoors (smoking indoors is illegal in San Francisco), Power Plant plans to sell a product line of branded pot edibles and concentrates. But the gym is still a long way from opening day and first sales. McAlpine and Williams must get final approval for the gym, which includes finalizing a lease and attaining a dispensary lounge permit before Power Plant can open its doors.
