A cell phone-related violation last Saturday resulted in a bumper haul of 320 pounds of cannabis and cash in excess of one million dollars. Two men were arrested, their arrests may lead to a wider crackdown based on the information they share. The weed is valued at more than $1 million on the streets. The combined haul is probably the largest that the Alameda County Narcotics task force has ever made.
Things unfolded quickly and rather serendipitously for the highway patrol officer who signaled a van to pull over because of a cell phone violation. This happened on Interstate 580 in Castro Valley. During the stop, a car tried to distract the officer by cutting in front of it. Both vehicles then tried to make their escape but were apprehended on city streets. A search of the van revealed a stash of 200 pounds of weed, and a further eight pounds in the car. Investigation revealed that the men were on their way to a storage locker in Alameda.
Officers, human and canine, searched the storage lockers and unearthed more marijuana that had been readied for the streets. They also found a suitcase carrying cash and equipment related to weed.
The seizures point to a very rewarding trade in marijuana that is being carried out by nefarious elements. The involved parties do not shy away from killings and shootings.
