Weed makes you hungry; you’ve always known it. But now, researchers have the necessary evidence and a firm understanding of how it happens.
Experiments at the Yale School of Medicine showed that rodents fed weed began feeling hungry instead of sated. THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, worked on the appetite center of the brain and turned its response to signals upside down.
The mechanism that is meant to make one feel full begins to send signals of hunger. It is pretty exciting to think of what cannabis can do to the human body at the neuron level. Cannabis actually tricks the human brain into acting against what it is actually wired to do. Drugs do that as well. That’s how one gets high with hard drugs.
If weed indeed acts on the human brain like how it acts on rodents, then scientists may be able to understand how weed makes humans crave not just food but other things as well.
Marijuana also influences cravings because THC binds with receptors in the brain that are responsible for aromas. Food flavors become that much more intense and this stimulates hunger.
