Arkansas Citizen Asking if Insurance will Cover Medical Marijuana

In a matter of months, medical marijuana is expected to be available at dispensaries around the state.

But some sick patients are afraid they won’t be able to afford it. Many people are asking how much it will cost and whether insurance might pay for it.

State Representative Doug House said medical marijuana will need to be competitive to street prices, which can be several hundred dollars an ounce. And don’t count on your insurance to pay for it.

“The medical marijuana amendment expressly states that the amendment should not be interpreted to require an insurance provider, either private sector or government insurance program, to reimburse for medical marijuana,” said Jake Bleed with the Department of Finance and Administration.

So your insurance can volunteer to cover it, but it’s doubtful many will.
