San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster was arrested in Tuscaloosa on Friday and charged with second degree possession of marijuana, according to the Tuscaloosa Sheriff’s Office arrest database, via AL.com. It is considered a Class A misdemeanor in Alabama.
Bond was set at $2,500 for Foster. This is all new, so there’s little information other than that.
Needless to say, this is a wretched way to start the offseason. Foster was a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and other than some injury concerns, he had a phenomenal season. He was the NFL defensive rookie of the month for December.
Foster had a bad NFL Combine before the draft, made worse by a diluted urine sample which is treated like a positive test per NFL policy. Foster will be in the league’s drug program going forward, though how the NFL treats that combine test has to be clarified before we know which stage exactly.
“The San Francisco 49ers organization is aware of the matter involving Reuben Foster and we are currently gathering all relevant facts,” the team said on Friday evening. You can see his mugshot here.
This is obviously a bad sign, regardless of your opinions on marijuana itself. The fact is that it’s not allowed by the NFL and obviously against the law in Alabama, and someone in Foster’s position should be smarter than that. Hopefully this ends here, but who knows?
