Two business partners are the recipients of the first medical marijuana facility licenses in Isabella County.
Michael Smolin and Chris Kososki applied for three licenses in Wise Township and were granted approval by the township board on Dec. 22, according to information from Wise Township that was obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.
Smolin lists a location in West Bloomfield for his address. Kososki lists an address but does not provide a city; however, a Google search for his name and that address turns up a match in Highland.
They received licenses from Wise Township for two Class C grower facilities (up to 1,500 plants) and one processor facility. They were the first ones to apply when the township began accepting applications in November.
They list 10169 N. Loomis Road in Wise Township as the address for their future business.
According to information boxes checked on the applications, the operation will be “a combination of structures pre-existing on the subject property and structures to be erected pending issuance of a permit.”
Wise Township is the first municipality in Isabella County to enact an ordinance and opt in to a new state law that allows medical marijuana facilities.
Kososki and Smolin still will need to obtain licenses from the state. The state began accepting applications in December but is not yet issuing licenses.
Wise Township’s ordinance allows for two 1,500-plant grow operations, so this means no more of those can locate in the township.
However, would-be operators of other types of facilities can still apply. The ordinance allows for up to two Class A grow operations (up to 500 plants) and up to two Class B grow operations (up to 1,000 plants).
It allows for up to two processor facilities, up to two provisioning centers, up to two secure transporter facilities and up to two safety compliance testing facilities.
