When it comes to medical marijuana reform, South Carolina may not be the first state that you think of. However, South Carolina Democrats voted on a non-binding medical marijuana question last night and the result was outstanding.
During last night’s primary election in South Carolina the Democratic ballot asked the following question, “Do you support passing a state law allowing doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to patients?” The answer from South Carolina Democrats was a resounding ‘yes.’ Per The Post and Courier:
Democrats supported passing a state law allowing doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to patients by a 82 percent to 18 percent margin, according to late unofficial returns.
The question was non-binding, so the successful vote does not mean that medical marijuana is legal in South Carolina. But it does send a clear message to South Carolina’s Legislature that there’s overwhelming support for medical cannabis reform, at least on the Democratic side.
Currently, possession of less than one ounce is a misdemeanor in South Carolina, punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a $200 fine for the first offense. For a subsequent offense, the jail sentence goes up to a year and the fine increases ten-fold. Cultivation of any amount of cannabis is a felony punishable by 5-25 years in prison.
