If you have consumed cannabis often enough, then you have likely been in a situation where you needed to mask the smell of cannabis smoke or vapor. This could be the case if a person lives in a dorm or apartment, or perhaps they are in a hotel room. I am not ashamed of the fact that I consume cannabis, but I do want to be respectful and mindful of the people around me. If I am in a setting like those, I will try to mask the smell as much as reasonably possible.
I have tried just about every trick in the book, with some tricks having more success than others. I have tried incense which is in some cases worse smelling than the smoke. I have done the towel on the base of a door to try to create some type of seal, which helps a little bit but certainly doesn’t eliminate the problem, if for any reason because the towel on the floor doesn’t cover the top or sides of the door which also release air to the outside.
The best thing that I have seen that helps mitigate the smell of cannabis smoke in a cost-effective way is a sploof. A sploof consists of a toilet paper roll tube, a sheet of fabric softener, and a rubber band. To make one all you have to do is cover one end of the toilet paper roll tube with the fabric softener and use the rubber band to keep it in place, as seen in the photo below:
You blow into the end that does not have the fabric softener sheet attached to it, and the smoke goes through the fabric softener which works as a smell filter of sorts. You can also use a paper towel if you are in a bind, but it doesn’t work as well as the fabric softener since the fabric softener is (presumably) scented. I have heard of it called a sploof more than any other name, but I have also heard a number of other names for this concept.
If you don’t have a rubber band you can ball up the fabric softener and put it inside of the tube, then pinch/fold the end to keep the fabric softener in place as much as possible. It’s not ideal but does work in a jam. Replace the fabric softener as often as is needed. Obviously, if you use it too much without switching out the sheet of fabric softener it will diminish in effectiveness over time.
If you search for images of sploofs online you will find some that people have given some character with designs and whatnot. You will also come across inventions that are built on the same principal. Those products are much more professional than a toilet paper roll, but if they are worth the money or not is something that consumers need to decide on their own. The sploof described in this article is obviously extremely cheap to make.
