SPRINGFIELD, IL — The Illinois Department of Public Health issued a warning that use of synthetic cannabinoids — also known as fake weed, K2 or spice — can cause bleeding from the eyes and ears, and patients in Illinois have suffered from severe bleeding from the nose as well as blood in urine, bleeding gums, coughing up blood and extremely heavy periods in females. The warning came Friday as the number of reports of severe bleeding jumped to 32 statewide, according to the Chicago Tribune.
On Tuesday, state health officials said six people in northeast Illinois — all of whom had reported using synthetic marijuana — has suffered bouts of severe bleeding. The severe bleeding reports began on March 10, according to IDPH.
A total of 32 people in Illinois have visited emergency rooms for severe bleeding after synthetic cannabinoid use, the Tribune reported. That was 10 more than the 22 people cited by IDPH a day earlier.
No deaths have been reported. Officials said the severe bleeding was due to synthetic cannabinoids — a synthetic drug not derived from actual cannabis or marijuana — interfering with the blood’s ability to coagulate.
“Synthetic cannabinoids are unsafe and should be avoided,” IDPH said Friday in a Facebook post.
