With commercial cannabis flourishing, some of the rarest weed strains are becoming even harder to find. The strains with the highest yields and potency are favored when growing. So, if a strain isn’t worth a growers time they might not even bother with it. Other landrace strains are rare because they can only grow in certain environments. Additionally, pure indica/sativa strains are becoming harder to find as hybrid strains increase in popularity. The move towards potency is appreciated, but there are some rare strains we won’t forget. Here are the rarest strains on earth.
20. Colombian Gold
Colombian Gold is a hard to find classic strain that was popular in the 1960s. It’ll be a lot harder to come across this strain today. During the 1960’s most weed being smoked were leaves, stems, and seeds. However, Colombian Gold was known for consisting of fresh full nugs.
The strain is a landrace sativa meaning it hasn’t been crossed with any other strains. If done right, Colombian Gold should be earthy, skunky and sweet. It was once a highly sought after strain.
In fact, the Green House Seed Company sent a strain hunting crew on an expedition in Colombia to find the rare strain. Arjan Roskam, the companies CEO has bred strains like White Widow, Super Silver Haze and more. He’s well plugged into the world of cannabis and had to have a team and mission dedicated to finding Colombian Gold seeds, illustrating the strains rarity.
19. Malawi Gold
Named for its rarity, Malawi Gold is one of the rarest strains on earth. The strain is native to Malawi in Africa and one of their greatest exports.
Malawi Gold smells like fruits and a strong spice. Some describe it as sweet with a hint of pineapple. Its nugs are long dense, and highly-resinous.
Similar to Colombian Gold, Malawi Gold is a landrace sativa and another quest for the Green House Seed Company.
This time they spent 6 to 7 hours following locals on their first day in Malawi and found nothing. The next day, they got quads and managed to find a small field with some Malawi Gold seeds.
18. Thai
Another pure sativa landrace on the list is called Thai. Popular in U.S. from the 70s to the 80s, Thai was also referred to as “Thai Sticks” because they are traditionally packaged into long sticks.
Thai is harder to find because it is meant to grow in tropical climates. Although it’s possible to grow today with modern greenhouse technology, the long growth cycle makes it less worth a growers time. If an expert has the patience, what they’ll get are nugs with a fruity citrus aroma.
Thai may be hard to come across, but you can probably find it’s children around. The sativa legend gave rise to the classic Haze strain as well as Voodoo and Juicy Fruit.

17. Neville’s Haze
Close to being a full Haze, Neville’s Haze was crossed with Northern Lights #5 to make it 1/4 indica. It is named after it’s breeder, one of the founding members of the Greenhouse Seed Company: Neville Schoenmakers.
The strain came about in the 70’s and nearly became extinct at the beginning of the 80’s because there were many easier strains to grow at the time.
Neville’s Haze has won multiple awards including the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1998. The seeds are still around, but the long grow cycle make it a less commonly produced strain.
16. Hindu Kush
Hindu Kush is a mountain range where a strain by the same name grows. The range stretches 500 miles from Pakistan to Afghanistan with harsh climates.
The conditions have caused the strain to sprout sticky coats of sparkling trichomes. The plant gives off a sweet but musky scent. When smoking, it tastes like pine, incense, and herbs.
Hindu Kush is a pure indica landrace that made its way to the U.S. in the 1960’s. It was one of the first popular strains that had shades of purple in the leaves. The purple comes from large amounts of anthocyanins being activated by cold weather.
15. Idukki Gold
One strain you’ll probably never come across is Idukki Gold. Also referred to as Kerala Gold, the strain comes from Idukki, a district in the state of Kerala in southern India.
The buds have a pungent, spicy, herbal scent. Idukki Gold is considered one of the finest strains in Asia and known to make great hash.
The strain is only getting harder to find because it is illegally grown. The police in the region have been cracking down on cannabis. So growers have been abandoning their crops.
14. Panama Red
Panama Red was considered a classic strain popular in the 1960’s to the 1990’s. The pure sativa landrace originates in Panama.
It was known for the borderline psychedelic high that it provided. The energetic high makes it a perfect daytime high.
While it isn’t impossible to find some Panama Red today, the long flowering times caused growers to leave it behind for more profitable strains.
13. Lamb’s Breath
Some people call it Lamb’s Bread, others argue Lamb’s Breath is a slightly different strain. This strain is a landrace sativa legend that comes from Jamaica.
The high grants an energetic buzz and an escalating euphoria. It’s perfect for creative activities and stress relief.
The buds are dank, large, sticky, and dense at the same time. It’s no wonder rastafarians including Bob Marley consider the strain a favorite.
12. Bruce Banner
Real Bruce Banner is hard to come across. This strain is a High Times Cannabis Cup winner and for good reasons. While most sativas average at about 14% THC, this bad boy averages at 20% and reaches up to 30%!
Green and powerful like the comic book character it was named after, a couple of hits of this will hulk smash your stress away.
Bruce Banner is the perfect wake and bake strain. Too tired in the morning? A Bruce Banner high is like getting a giant green foot to the ass.
The effects are energetic and euphoric, this strain won’t leave you on the couch.
One of the greatest features is the taste and scent that come with Bruce Banner. The scent is both fruity and skunky.
The taste is sweet like strawberries which makes sense because the strain is a cross between Strawberry Diesel and OG Kush.
11. Fruity Pebbles OG
Named for its sweet smell and fruit-like taste, Fruity Pebbles OG is a popular hybrid in California.
It leans more to the indica side, and most buds range from 12 to 20% THC.
Fruity Pebbles OG provides a calm, relaxing high and too much of it will leave you couch locked.
The scent and flavor are something like a berry lemonade. Much like a bowl of the colorful cereal, Fruity Pebbles nugs are made from a variety of strains including: Tahoe Alien, Granddaddy Purple, and Green Ribbon.
Alien Genetics, the breeder of Fruity Pebbles OG, are rumored to have sold a limited number of seeds and charged $1000 a pack. So, real Fruity Pebbles OG can be hard to find.
10. Chronic
If you’ve never heard of Chronic you probably weren’t listening to hip-hop in the 90’s. This strain was big for bringing weed into the mainstream.
Artists like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg who is now a weed and rap legend, came up off of Chronic.
Even Kanye West said “a hit of that chronic” got him stuck. We’d say his description is accurate because Chronic is known for it’s heavy-body high.
Nowadays, this strain is a hard find because there are newer stronger strains. After legends like Sour Diesel and OG Kush came into the spotlight Chronic has been less sought after.
The strain is a cross between Northern Lights, Skunk, and AK-47.
9. Puna Budder
Puna Budder is a strain that brings together two separate sides of the world. The strain is half Afghani and half Hawaiian.
The Hawaiian strains used had a mostly sativa lineage and the Afghani half was a pure indica.
Puna Budder has a unique smell, almost like a baklava. The nugs give off a sweet scent like brown sugar and earthy nut.
This strain is still floating around but it’s hard to find. Only a few people have gotten to sample the strain despite it being around for years.
8. Oaxacan Highland
A classic landrace from Mexico, Oaxacan Highland was popular from the 60’s to the 70’s.
The sativa-dominant strain was best known for its psychedelic effects. It was said that the Oaxacan high added to the visual distortions from psychedelics like LSD and Magic Mushrooms.
Oaxacan Highland has both a sweet and spicy aroma. It smells like a spicy herb with hints of fruity pine.
The original version of this strain has fallen out of the marketplace. However, Oaxacan Highland has birthed strains like Purple Thai, Blueberry, and Flo.
7. Angola Roja
Angola Roja is an African sativa landrace strain with a history dating back nearly 500 years. The Portuguese colonized Angola in the 1500’s and began cultivating and exporting Angolan weed.
In fact, the popular red strains from South America are said to have descended from Angola Roja.
Nowadays, weed is illegal in the region so barely any herb gets into or out of the country. So, good luck getting your hands on some original Angola Roja.
6. Lebanese
Lebanon has some of the best-known hash in the world. They also have some of the rarest strains.
Red Lebanese is mostly non-psychoactive while the yellow variety is higher in THC.
The Real Seed Company is working to preserve the lineage of the Lebanese strains. However, you probably won’t come across any from your local dispensary.
5. Roadkill Skunk
Roadkill Skunk is named for it’s ridiculously pungent skunk smell. In fact, it’s one of the stinkiest skunk strains out there.
Roadkill is an indica-dominant hybrid that has decreased in popularity. The THC content is considered moderate to high.
The strain is a cross between Skunk #1 and Afghani strains. The high has a pretty intense cerebral buzz for a mostly indica strain. You may get couch-locked from the dominant indica effects.
Some argue that you can’t find any real Roadkill Skunk today. However, there are varieties that pay homage to the original like Canada’s BC Roadkill.
4. Parvati
Parvati is a unique strain. It is known to produce a dark and oily cannabis resin that makes great hash.
Parvati has high CBD levels, making it perfect for medical use. It can be grown both indoors and out and it’s commonly used to make hash.
The smell is close to that of a spicy fruit and the sticky resinous buds have a rich flavor.
Parvati is another strain being carefully preserved by The Real Seed Company. They’re one of the only sources of Parvati seeds and they often sell out of them.
3. Molokai Frost
This strain was popular in the 70’s and 80’s but lately it’s become harder to find. Molokai Forest is a Hawaiin landrace sativa with potent effects.
Molokai can reach up to 22% THC, and the sweet skunky strain creates an enjoyable head high. Not much else is known about this strain due to it’s rarity.
2. Greek Kalamata
It’s not often that you get a strain from Greece. The country’s harsh drug policies make cannabis growing and exporting near impossible.
However, if you’re lucky enough to come across it, the country has a strain called Greek Kalamata. It’s got an earthy citrus cent and an upbeat high.
The strain is sativa-dominant and has a long history. Some say Kalamata has East Asian and African genetics dating back to 1,100 A.D.
1. Black African Magic
Another old sativa, Black African Magic was popping in the 70’s and 80’s. Now, seeds from this strain seem impossible to find. In 2005,
DJ Short, a famous breeder, described Black African as the most potent strain he’s ever come across. He resents the fact that he could never get his hands on the seeds.
Some say the leaves and buds have black, purple and blue-hues to them. The magical strain provides an intense cerebral high.
