Does THC in marijuana cause gynecomastia, colloquially known as man boobs, a.k.a moobs? The jury is still out, but if you’re not in favor of weed smoking, then the idea of a guy sprouting breasts from consuming cannabis is a wonderful handle to beat weed lovers with…metaphorically, of course.
Here, by the way, we are talking about the growth of breast tissue, and not fat. Moobs happen when estrogen levels rise in a male body and testosterone levels drop. To date, there has been no direct linking or established causative relationship between gynecomastia and marijuana consumption.
In the absence of any conclusive evidence, one can safely call the whole thing a myth. As far back as 1977, the American Journal of Surgery had asserted that there is no evidence to conclusively prove that there is a relationship between chronic cannabis consumption and man boobs.
Next time, someone tells you that doobies make boobies, ask the person if it holds true for both men and women? Except for anecdotal references, there is nothing to show that this is the case for men. For women, there isn’t even anecdotal evidence to support the claimed estrogen enhancing and breast tissue developing properties of weed. Had it been the case, there would have been a whole industry of creams and lotions promising a bigger bust.
