Curing is a food preservation technique that goes back in time. Man has always cured meats and veggies for times when fresh food was scarce. Over time, we learnt that curing not only preserves but also improves flavors. Weed lovers practice curing, and when done right, cured cannabis flowers taste great, their flavors and potency are enhanced, and you can store them for longer.
Here’s the old-fashioned way to cure weed so that you can enjoy a smoke whenever you want to.
Harvest the flower buds. Trim the flowers of their fan leaves, but not the trichomes that are chock-full of cannabinoids. Keep the flowers out to dry for about a week. Dry them in shade or in a dark room where the temperature does not fluctuate beyond 60-70°F and the humidity does not go beyond 55%. This will protect the weed flowers from microbial attack. Once the buds have dried to the extent where they can easily be plucked from the stem with zero effort, we can proceed to the next step.
Place the dried buds in airtight containers but do not stuff the containers with them. Keep them in a dark space at a constant temperature of around 70°F and humidity levels between 60-65%. Shake the container every once in a while so that the flowers can be moved around in the space.
One-ounce, wide—mouthed jars are the best option. More flowers in bigger jars may lead to too much moisture release and the risk of mold. During the first two or three weeks, open the jars once daily to release excess moisture and allow oxygen to enter the jar. Later, you can do this once a week, and after two months, you need to open the jar once a month to check if the buds have dried. If you detect moisture or an ammonia buildup, expose the buds to air till the staleness dissipates. The buds can be cured for up to six months. There are no further benefits to be accrued after this period. Enjoy!
