Families in Cambridgeshire have been sniffing cannabis wafting across villages which could be coming from a sugar giant’s factory.
British Sugar is investigating whether its cannabis farm is responsible for a smell which has been baffling Cambridgeshire householders.
The sugar producer began growing a non-psychoactive variety of cannabis at its Wissington site this year for use in epilepsy medicine for children.
The smell has reached as far as Soham and Burwell.
One resident wrote on Facebook: “Soham was rife with it at 6am today, thought my neighbour was up!”
Another said: “I smelt it this morning was pretty strong.”
A spokesman from Fenland District Council said: “We have received a number of complaints about the smell of cannabis. The issue is not limited to Fenland, with the odour being reported across Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.
“Along with Environmental Health teams from neighbouring authorities, we are continuing to investigate the source of the smell, including looking at sites licenced to grow the plant by the Home Office.”
British Sugar is investigating if the work they are doing at their Wissington site, near Downham Market is behind the odour.
A spokesman said: “At British Sugar we’re currently investigating the recent reports to understand the distance any smells could travel. We will do everything we can to reduce the intensity of any smell from our operations and any impact that this could cause.”
